Welcome to the Keane Research Group at Heriot-Watt University. We are an active group with research activities that cover materials synthesis, catalysis, chemical engineering and green/sustainable chemistry. We focus on new catalytic materials (notably gold system), associated characterisation and applications in clean production of high value chemicals. Other themes include water treatment, hybrid enzyme/inorganic catalysts, fuel production from waste polymers, etc. Please refer to RESEARCH for details. Enjoy your visit and feel free to contact us if you have any enquires.

Surface reaction of hydrogen with 2,4-dichlorophenol on an alumina supported Au-Ni bimetallic catalyst prepared by the reductive deposition of Au onto Ni. Catalyst testing coupled with surface characterisation has established Au-Ni synergy leading to a more effective hydrogen cleavage of the C-Cl bonds; enhanced dechlorination is associated with clusters bearing a uniform Au/Ni composition.

The three phase catalytic hydrodechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) over Pd/Al2O3 in a novel continuous reactor delivered higher reaction rates, enhanced selectivity and an extended catalyst lifetime when compared with operation in a conventional batch stirred tank reactor.
